A family was already feeling terrible over the loss of their grandfather. However, they were shocked, to put it mildly, after a decayed foot from the adjacent grave was spotted atop their grandfather’s clean casket during the burial.
According to the New York Daily News, a family from New Jersey was mourning over the loss of their 85-year-old grandfather, Cleveland Butler, who had died from a fatal stroke. When Butler’s flower-decked coffin was due to be lowered, a soil-covered foot from next grave made itself apparent, and upset the apple cart.

“This was a very traumatizing situation, first dealing with losing my father and then this,” Sandra Butler said.
The family, who may pursue legal action, became even more upset when the cemetery workers continued burying without saying a word.
“No one said anything to us. It was like business as usual for them. They just dumped the dirt in the plot like it was normal, like it’s nothing to them,” Sandra said.
Sandra’s brother, Alonzo, was upset that the horrid incident didn’t seem to register as an issue with the workers.
“We were shocked. All we could say was “Wow”, because that was a human, someone else’s loved one I feel guilty seeing someone else’s family member like that,” Alonzo said.
According to other relatives who attended the burial, they saw one worker fishing out for his phone and a pack of cigarettes that he had accidentally dropped into the grave.
Caretaker Bill Plog was surprised by this incident. “There was a casket. It deteriorated. You can purchase a concrete vault, but people don’t. That grave there is from 1969 . . . It’s unfortunate that this happened, but this is a graveyard,” he said.
He went on to explain the workers’ actions. “People are grieving. The last thing you want to do is get into an argument with people. Honestly, I wanted to get it over with as soon as possible,” he said.
