Like many other shelter dogs in need of a forever home across the United States, these two pups were at risk of being euthanized if they weren’t adopted by the end of the day. Luckily, they were rescued in the nick of time, after a touching photo of them hugging behind bars went viral on social media.
Kala, an 11-month-old hound mix, and Keira, a 15-month-old boxer mix, were scheduled to be put to sleep at a Georgia kill shelter in July 2015.
An adoption coordinator at the Etowah Valley Humane Society snapped the heartbreaking photo of the shelter dogs embracing each other from behind bars, as they were facing their own imminent deaths. Kala was seen tenderly wrapping her paws around Keira’s neck, as if comforting her bestie, and seemingly terrified of being put down.
In a bid to save the pups from being euthanized, Angels Among Us Pet Rescue in Atlanta, Georgia, posted the heart-wrenching photo of them hugging in a Facebook post, along with a plea for help.
The narrative, written from Kala’s perspective, read: “I’m Kala. This is Keira. We’re so scared in here. The people working in the shelters see how scared we are but just told each other that today is our deadline. We have to have someone rescue us or we’ll be “next.”
“If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. I’ll see her as she goes down the hallway. She won’t come back and I’ll cry.”
Angels Among Us pleaded: “We really don’t have time to spare. We have no fosters available. Animals in need have overwhelmed us recently and we must have someone today apply to foster. They will do fine as long as they’re alive. You can donate, share and pray.”
Soon, the picture went viral and won hearts on social media. In just two hours after the post, the group posted some wonderful news that Kala and Keira were eventually rescued from the kill shelter. Not only did the dogs find a temporary foster home, dozens of people had also stepped forward to offer them a new forever home.
“Exactly 2 hours and 6 minutes. That’s how long it took this amazing community of animals lovers to come together to save the lives of two canine friends,” Angels Among Us wrote.
For three months, the canines were fostered by a woman named Cris Folchitto, who agreed to take them in temporarily just so they wouldn’t be put down. Finally, on Oct. 27, Angels Among Us announced news of their adoption in another Facebook post.
“WE’RE ADOPTED!!! After looking everywhere for our new family, they found us!” wrote Angels Among Us.
Kala and Keira were officially adopted by longtime friends Wendy and Pam, who live together in Atlanta.
“I picked up the People magazine last week, after following the story on the hugging dogs, and knew I just had to call,” Wendy told Angels Among Us.
We’re so glad the two pups have been given a second chance at life. May they live happily together ever after!
