7-months-old baby on vegan diet starves to death, judge convicts parents for negligence

To lose a child is a very painful experience for any parent but to lose a child to death due to the negligence of the parents itself is much more painful. Here is the story of a husband and wife who were convicted by a judge for the demise of their son after they fed him on a vegan diet.

Baby Lukas was seven months old and only weighed nine pounds at the time of his death. This weight was not ideal for his age as he was underweight by seven pounds according to figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control Prevention. They say that he could possibly have died because of a vegan diet which made him undernourished coupled with organ failure.

An autopsy showed he was dehydrated and his stomach was completely empty.

His parents ran a natural food store in a town in Belgium. They were feeding Baby Lukas on an alternative diet and milk made of Quinoa, oat, buckwheat, and rice. They did these because according to the mother, Sandrina V, she never lactated and when they gave him formula he would not drink it. They both assumed that Baby Lukas was lactose intolerant.

Baby Lukas had no doctors record in any hospital and child protection services have not heard of the couple nor the baby. They assumed that Baby Lukas had an eating problem which they thought was normal of babies and was only brought to a homeopathic doctor on the other side of the country.

The child’s mother testified, “Sometimes he gained a little weight, sometimes he lost a little. We never wished for the death of our son.”

While his father stated, “We never went with Lucas to a doctor because we never noticed anything unusual.”

The judge gave the parents a suspended six month sentence due to “The [death was the] result of the systematic offer of food which was not suitable,” he argued. “His health was seriously impeded, and he eventually died.”

It is very sad that baby Lukas died because of negligence. This is indeed one serious lesson to all parents—feed and raise your children in the correct and traditional way.
