Five years ago, this baby girl was shaken so severely by her father that the doctors thought she wouldn’t live through the night. Yet, this tough baby miraculously survived. Years later, her mother shared her story to inform others—“Never shake a baby.”
Cheyenne Rae, 5, is an adorable girl who gets excited about going to school.
“… she pops right up and asks what she’s going to wear today haha Girl loves clothes,” wrote Cheyenne’s mother, Amy Owensby, on the Prayers for Cheyenne Rae Facebook page.
Five years back, it was a different story.
The poor girl suffered severe brain damage after being shaken by her father when she was just 8 months old.
On that fateful day of Aug. 17, 2012, Owensby dropped off the then 8-month-old Cheyenne to be with her father, James Davis Jr., for a routine weekend visit. Owensby and Davis were separated.
An hour and a half later, Owensby received a call from Davis—Cheyenne wasn’t breathing.
What led to the baby girl’s critical condition was Davis shaking his daughter in a moment of anger to stop Cheyenne from crying.
“All that came crashing down. … I snapped. There’s no reason for it. I don’t know why I did it,” said Davis, according to an online report from SHJ.com.
Cheyenne was later airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital.
“I will never get the image of her lifeless body being placed in that helicopter out of my head,” Owensby recalled.
The result of Davis’s action was devastating. The shake fractured Cheyenne’s skull and caused her brain to swell and bleed.
Davis initially lied to cover up what he did, but eventually pleaded guilty for shaking Cheyenne. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2013.
Owensby was only allowed to hold Cheyenne a week after the devastating abuse.
Cheyenne later spent years recovering from the severe injury, undergoing multiple surgeries and therapy sessions. Unfortunately, doctors had to remove half of her brain, which left her paralyzed on the right side of her body.
In May 2015, Cheyenne still struggled from the consequences of the incident. Owensby wrote on Facebook that her daughter wasn’t walking, and was hopping on one foot due to balance issues.
“She literally struggles DAILY from what was done to her.. she can’t hold a babydoll and her cup at once,” shared Owensby.
However, brave Cheyenne “typically does everything with a smile.”
Following Cheyenne’s arduous recovery, Owensby hopes to share her story to warn people, “Never shake a baby.”
“So remember that when your child is screaming & nothing you’re doing is soothing them. Put them down and WALK AWAY!!” she stressed.
