Le Thi Thanh Thai was just 13 when she discovered she had heart disease. To understand her illness better and to help others in the same situation, she pursued a career as a cardiologist and went on to become head of the cardiology department at Cho Ray Hospital, one of the largest hospitals in Vietnam.
She also founded the Vietnamese Society of Cardiology and is a member of the Asian-Pacific Society of Cardiology. Over her 50-year career she has trained many generations of cardiologists and written numerous scholarly articles on her subject.
But despite her medical knowledge and her many accomplishments, as the years passed Thanh Thai’s heart disease progressed, and eventually she underwent surgery. Unfortunately, it did not go well. Her prognosis was dire, and she went home to wait for death.
To add insult to injury, her beloved husband died suddenly around this time, leaving Thanh Thai utterly devastated. She was in both physical and emotional pain, and she could only lie in bed, waiting to reunite with him in the next world.
But just when it seemed there was no hope, hope appeared. Thanh Thai found a way to save her life—and it wasn’t through medical intervention.
A Second Chance at Life
Dr. Thanh Thai’s friend and colleague, Dr. Thu, a specialized consultant with years of experience in medical science, was in charge of medical services for the Cambodian royal family and government authorities, and for 22 years she worked between Cambodia and Vietnam.
One day, Thu told Thanh Thai about a traditional self-improvement practice from China called Falun Dafa, or Falun Gong. She said this practice had miraculously healed her health problems.
For more than 20 years, Thu had suffered from a neurological disease. On top of that she had rheumatoid arthritis, which caused uncomfortable knee pain and prevented her from bending her legs or standing for very long.
However, after just two months of practicing Falun Dafa and studying Zhuan Falun, the practice’s main book of teachings, Thu recovered. She was also able to do all five Falun Dafa exercises with no problem, even though they included standing still as well as meditating in the cross-legged lotus position.
Thu said the practice had changed her life and she wanted Thanh Thai to experience it herself.
“She was so delighted that she brought me a lot of materials at once—books, cassettes, and the book Zhuan Falun,” said Thanh Thai. “She told me: ‘It is thanks to the righteous Fa (Law) that I have fully recovered. You can tell by just looking at how healthy and young I am right now. I overcame a neurological disease and rheumatoid arthritis. If you want, I can show you right now how I practice the exercises. Actually, never mind. Just read the book first.’”
When Thanh Thai began reading Zhuan Falun, she suddenly realized that she had heard of Falun Dafa before. Twelve years previously, another colleague, Dr. Thoi Thu Tai, had told her about the practice.
“She told me: ‘Thai. I am completely healthy and do not have to take any medication. I no longer have bleeding gums, sinusitis, and rheumatoid arthritis. You should read this book,’” Thanh Thai recalled.
However, back then, due to her scientific, evidence-based background, Thanh Thai decided Falun Dafa wasn’t for her. She didn’t even really look into it.
This time, Thanh Thai was determined not to let this seemingly magical practice slip away from her again. She immediately embraced Falun Dafa, doing the five exercises regularly, studying the teachings, and striving to live by truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance—the guiding principles of the practice.
Before long she began to recover, regaining her health, strength, and vitality. Now, she can walk up three or four flights of stairs with no problem—something impossible before due to her condition. She has also become more cheerful and content.
The year she turned 70, Thanh Thai spoke at a Falun Dafa conference in Vietnam, sharing her experience before an audience of hundreds about how this ancient Chinese practice had benefited her in so many ways.
She ended her speech by expressing gratitude to the Falun Dafa founder and teacher, Mr. Li Hongzhi: “I am wholeheartedly grateful for the grace of Teacher Li, who has given me a second chance at life,” she said.
Falun Gong or Falun Dafa is a cultivation practice of mind and body that teaches truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance as a way to improve health and moral character and attain spiritual wisdom.
