Ms. Hoang Ha from Hai Duong in northern Vietnam spent a small fortune and looked far and wide in vain for treatment for her cancer. In hopelessness four years and three surgeries later, she says she was miraculously cured when she put faith in a remedy that was already right at her doorstep.
Up until my late twenties, I was generally a healthy person, living a normal life in our northern Vietnam town.
It was in 2009, at the young age of 29, that I became aware of my pre-cancer of the larynx. That was the beginning of my years-long struggle with the horrible disease that is becoming ever more prevalent in Vietnam. According to the World Health Organization, Vietnam is among the countries with the highest rates of cancer fatalities. It’s estimated that about 315 people per day die from cancer in Vietnam.
It was due to suspicion of an infection that took me to the doctor for a checkup. At first, I received simple remedies for a sore throat, but months went by and I wasn’t cured.
Eventually I went to a major hospital in the capital, Hanoi, and underwent different tests. The results were clear: A laryngeal tumor had formed on my left vocal cords.
The doctor suggested that I have an operation to cut away parts of the tumor, as removing the tumor entirely would leave me without voice.
That was my first operation. I was sent home with many medicines, but three months later I lost my voice. I would use all of my might to speak, but the sound was so weak that others could barely hear what I said.
I kept taking my medications for several more months, but eventually I couldn’t go on any longer. I returned to the hospital and, much to my dismay, was told that the tumor had regrown.
I asked the doctor to explain, and it felt like a bucket of cold water had been poured over my head when he replied: “Don’t you know? You have a laryngeal papilloma. It cannot be cured.”
I thus learned that my husband had kept hidden from me the results of the biopsy tests after my first operation.
I did not want to accept the truth. I re-did every single test, including the biopsy, in the hopes that the earlier test results were wrong.
But the doctor told me the tumor had in fact spread to the right vocal cords and that I needed to have another surgery right away. If the tumor got any bigger, I would die, he said, as the tumor would block the air passageway in my throat. The only option then would be to pierce a hole in my neck so I could breathe, and I would have to live with that hole for the rest of my life.
I took my medical records to a leading professor in the field of ear, nose, and throat diseases, hoping to find out about the latest research and treatments. But I felt even more hopeless after he told me that my disease remained “a big question mark” in his field. “If the tumor gets bigger, you will need to have surgery again,” he said.
Then I took my records to an old friend who is also a doctor in that field. He told me that, with the best treatment, I could maybe live to be 50.
Another leading doctor I consulted said that even if I went to the United States to get more advanced medical care, my disease would not be cured. What’s more, I could eventually lose my vocal cords if I kept undergoing surgeries.
I had no choice but to have my second operation at that time, a year after my first surgery. I carried a faint hope and felt like I was in the middle of the “Hunger Games,” as everything was so unpredictable. Unfortunately, the second surgery left me with even less ability to speak.
It was at this point that my husband and I started looking for alternative treatments for my cancer. This quest took us all over Vietnam, trying remedies that I never thought I would consider.
In Search of Cure
Once, we went to see an herbal doctor in Phu Tho province who specialized in treating cancer. You could call his treatment very “unique”: drinking the substance extracted from the liver of toads.
The worst part of that trip was seeing the other patients, most of whom were in serious condition in the final stages of cancer. I was haunted by their appearances, imagining myself in the future being in the same condition. Each day I witnessed patients passing away one by one, a harrowing scene.
When my “treatment” ended without a cure, I came home with huge anxiety and fear and continued searching. I traveled to other provinces, such as Quang Nam, Vinh Phuc, and Hung Yen, to seek answers in traditional medicine.
I even flew in a helicopter on one trip to see a specialist in a remote area. I looked for for treatment anywhere I could think of. I didn’t want to die. I was too young, and my children were still very small.
In 2012, I encountered what would later become my cure, even though I did not recognize it at the time.
I was going to the hospital for a checkup one day when I saw a group of people doing the meditation exercises of Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong, a traditional Chinese practice for self-improvement.
I had heard about Falun Dafa before, so I decided to join them and learn the exercises. I also learned about the teachings, which center on the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance, but I did not have a good understanding of their meaning.
Nevertheless, I began doing the exercises and noticed that whenever I finished I would feel very relaxed and comfortable. My health condition also started to improve. I always had painful inflammation in my throat before, but as I did the exercises, the discomfort in my throat became much relieved. Although I still had difficulty speaking, I was getting better and could speak louder compared to before.
But beyond the exercises, I did not follow the teachings of Falun Dafa seriously in my daily life. As I later realized, this prevented me from fully benefiting from the practice. My health situation began to deteriorate again after a while.
In July 2012, my situation became alarming. I could only take a few steps before I had to sit down and catch my breath. My voice was getting fainter by the day, and I was only able to whisper.
After a medical exam, the doctor told me that the tumor had become bigger again and was blocking my breathing. I was hospitalized and had a third operation.
Before the operation, the doctor told me that there is a chance the tumor would grow back again as early as one month following the operation, in which case I would need another surgery.
But the worst news was yet to come. Tests showed that the tumor had spread to other parts of my body.
Is This the End?
It seemed I was nearing the end of my life, and it was just a matter of time before my time would be up.
But I had the sense there was a ray of brightness shining deep within my consciousness, something that felt sacred but that I did not fully understand.
I thought again about all the treatments and operations I had undergone. I also recalled my experience learning Falun Dafa. I remembered all the positives I found from doing the exercises and all the teachings contained in the main book of Falun Dafa, “Zhuan Falun,” about how to be a healthy person in both mind and body.
I made up my mind to seriously practice Falun Dafa by doing the exercises as well as following the teachings.
Falun Dafa is a traditional Chinese discipline that requires the practitioner to cultivate both the mind and body and assimilate “to the highest qualities of the universe—truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance.” At first, I didn’t know what it meant “to cultivate one’s mind” and did not realize how it applied to my daily interactions with others.
For example, I had a bad habit of not wanting my husband to share his feelings with anyone except me. I would get annoyed and jealous whenever I saw him getting closer to another person, male or female.
My attitude gradually changed after I decided to earnestly cultivate myself. I spent a lot of time reading the teachings of Falun Dafa and doing the exercises, and eventually I understood better the principles behind each word in “Zhuan Falun.”
I started to cleanse my mind. I became more tolerant, learned to take self-interest lightly, and think of others before myself. With these improvements in my character, I experienced intense physical reactions that I recognized as the cleansing of my body.
In April and May 2013, I came down with a fever and coughed continuously for months until the end of that year.
During that time, I coughed out tiny pieces of substances that resembled small whitehead pimples. Then I coughed out small pieces that were all black. One afternoon while doing the Falun Dafa exercises, I coughed out a black piece the size of half of a bean.
Shortly after, I went to the hospital to have an examination, and the doctor was absolutely astonished by the result: The tumors that had spread to other parts of my body had been eliminated.
At this point, I was completely convinced of the miracles of Falun Dafa.
These occurrences of body cleansing happened time and again. For example, in November 2013, I lost my voice for one week, but I was very calm, didn’t panic, and persisted in doing the exercises and reading “Zhuan Falun.” After just a short time, my voice came back, and it was louder and clearer than before.
Today, my voice has almost recovered to its original strength and quality, and I am always feeling happy and full of energy.
Falun Dafa has given me a second chance at life, while costing me nothing, as it is completely free to learn and practice. In stark contrast, many families have found themselves on the brink of bankruptcy, selling their possessions or borrowing large sums of money in order to pay for the costs of curing cancer.
Thanks to the tenets of Falun Dafa, truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance, I have become a much calmer person. I no longer feel jealous or get angry easily. In the past, this bad habit was the cause of many arguments I had with my husband.
I am also not so controlling as before, and no longer force my family members to do what I say. Now that I understand what it truly means to “cultivate the mind,” I pay attention to how I conduct myself and try to always adhere to the principles of Falun Dafa.
My cure helped many of my family members and friends learn firsthand about the wonders of Falun Dafa. About 100 of them are now practicing Falun Dafa as well.
For example, my father, who used to be addicted to wine, suffered from degeneration of his back vertebrae, and had a short temper, gave up all of his bad habits after starting to practice Falun Dafa. As a result, his health improved dramatically.
Besides the health aspects of Falun Dafa, I truly hope that more people will practice the principles of Falun Dafa so that morality in society as a whole will be elevated.
From the bottom of my heart, I wish to help those who have a chance to read my story so that they can also experience vast improvements in their lives. My phone number is +8494.856.3819.
