Looking back at Nazi Germany today, it’s obvious that the regime’s genocide against the Jews was a massive crime. But at the time, due to the rampant propaganda spread by the Nazis, many were unable to realize the extent of it. Those who understood what was going on didn’t dare to speak out or stand up to protest it.

Similar methods have been used to brainwash Chinese citizens in order to justify the ongoing persecution against Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, a traditional meditation practice based on the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance.
“Falun Dafa is a practice which has brought better health and inner peace to millions around the world,” stated the New York Senate Resolution 1432 on World Falun Dafa Day, May 13, 2017.
To justify the persecution, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) launched a systematic and all-encompassing propaganda campaign to slander Falun Gong and label it as a cult. The campaign included censoring information to prevent the Chinese people from knowing that Falun Gong is welcomed worldwide and freely practiced in more than 100 countries across five continents.
Launched on July 20, 1999, the CCP’s campaign of persecution has continued unabated for nearly 20 years, but many still don’t question the Party line or realize that they have been systematically deceived.
The grand drama begins
On January 23, 2001, the day before the Chinese Lunar New Year, it was reported that five people, including a 12-year-old girl, set themselves on fire on Tiananmen Square in Beijing.
Within two hours of the incident, Xinhua News Agency made an announcement blaming Falun Gong practitioners for the self-immolation. Immediately after, CCTV broadcasted a commentary program making authoritative-sounding conclusions, again accusing Falun Gong.
This was in stark contrast to the way news is usually handled in China, where lower-level officials report to their superiors and so on until the top officials allow the news to be published. Manuscripts of sensitive news stories to be aired by Xinhua must be reviewed and drafted many times. But in this instance the story was out to the public with such unheard of speed that it aroused people’s suspicions.
Days after the incident, Washington Post reporter, Philip Pan, traveled to the hometown of two of the alleged self-immolators to investigate, finding no one had ever seen them practice Falun Gong.
Pan reported that neighbors of Liu Chunling, one of the two people who died in the incident, “said Liu worked in a local nightclub and was paid to dine with and dance with customers. None ever saw her practice Falun Gong.”
The film “False Fire,” which examines the suspicious points of the incident, shows Liu walking while the fire on her is mostly extinguished, when all of a sudden a heavy object hit her head and knocked her to the ground. A man in a military coat is captured on camera throwing the object. However, state-run media reported that Liu died from the flames.

A detailed analysis on the Minghui.org website indicates 54 facts that reveal how the “self-immolation” on Tiananmen Square that day was actually staged for propaganda purposes.
News reports and analyses about the incident are available on a number of international media, but are not accessible to the Chinese people due to the regime’s strict censorship that removes any keyword relating to Falun Gong.
Kay Rubacek, an Australian artist who started practicing Falun Gong in the 1990s, says anyone who “reads Falun Gong books will know that Falun Gong practitioners do not commit suicide and they don’t kill. So it’s clearly wrong, but the problem is, for anyone who hasn’t read that, they don’t know.”
Despite the many inconsistencies in the footage of the incident, the massive media blitz that followed it had the effect the regime desired: Falun Gong was now truly demonized in the eyes of the Chinese people, and further hate incitement was easy. It also gave the regime an excuse to step up the severity and range of its persecution campaign.
“No evidence that Falun Gong is a cult”
The CCP labelled Falun Gong as a cult to justify its persecution, which led to millions of practitioners being subjected to wrongful imprisonment, brainwashing, and torture.
David Kilgour, former Canadian secretary of state for Asia-Pacific and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, said last year at a roundtable in Stockholm hosted by the International Coalition to End Transplant Abuse that he’s been around Falun Gong practitioners in various countries over the years and has seen no signs of a cult.
“David [Matas] and I have met Falun Gong practitioners in probably 50 countries or even more maybe. All walks of life, all ages, all backgrounds, all education. … I’ve found them to be a wonderful group of people.”
David Matas, an international human rights lawyer based in Winnipeg, Canada, and also a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, agreed with Kilgour.
“Falun Gong, first of all, is not even an organization because it’s a set of exercises with a spiritual foundation. Everything’s on the internet, you don’t pay anything, you don’t sign up to anything, you can start whenever you want, you can stop with it whenever you want, you don’t even have to tell anybody you’re doing it. Their principles are very simple and ethical,” he said.
“There’s no evidence that Falun Gong is a cult of any sort,” said Wendy Rogers, professor of Clinical Ethics and deputy director of Australia’s Macquarie University Research Centre for Agency, Values and Ethics, according to the International Coalition to End Organ Pillaging in China.
“There’s no evidence of political actions to try to bring down the Chinese government. There’s no evidence of anything other than a deep desire to be left alone to practice their spiritual beliefs in peace and to not be locked up and murdered.”
And the scheme behind the drama is…
After the self-immolation propaganda hoax, the regime intensified its anti-Falun Gong propaganda on a national scale. Even elementary students became subject to “education” and forced to declare their support for the persecution.
The resulting apathy or hostility toward Falun Gong in China has greatly facilitated the regime’s attempt to eradicate the practice, which is what then-CCP leader Jiang Zemin vowed to do when he launched the persecution campaign. It is a primary cause for the ongoing reports of abuse, torture, and death.
The regime even developed a hugely profitable organ transplantation industry that has expanded to other parts of the world, with the organs coming from living Falun Gong practitioners. In other words, illegally incarcerated practitioners are being killed for their organs on a mass scale.
During a hearing at the European Parliament in 2010, then-EP Vice President Edward McMillan-Scott said the state-sanctioned forced organ harvesting from living Falun Gong practitioners in China constitutes a genocide.
“Falun Gong are to the Chinese regime today what the Jews were to the Nazis during the war, and we should all take note of this and look at China with new eyes,” he said.
“As I said, because between 70 and 100 million people in 1999 were practicing Falun Gong, this was seen by Jiang Zemin, then the leader of the Communist Party, as a threat to his own position.”
“It wasn’t of course, but he saw the opportunity of creating an enemy within, just as during the war, the Nazis singled out the Jews’ special characteristic and did what they did to the Jews. The same is happening today to Falun Gong in China. That is why it is genocide. That’s why I say it’s so serious.”
International community’s reaction
The report, “Bloody Harvest/The Slaughter: An Update” published in 2016 by independent investigators, shows an estimate of between 60,000 and 100,000 transplants per year since 2000 in China with the main source being Falun Gong prisoners of conscience. Tibetans, House Christians, and Uighur Muslims are also being killed on demand for their organs but on a much smaller scale.
“This is a drastic contrast to the often officially cited number of 10,000 transplants per year,” Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting (DAFOH) said in an open letter to the California State Senate.
The latest European Parliament Resolution and Resolution 343 by the U.S House of Representatives in 2016, along with New York Senate Resolution 1432, all call on “the People’s Republic of China to allow a credible, transparent, and independent investigation into organ transplant abuses.” Beijing has failed to respond to these calls.
DAFOH notes a bigger concern regarding forced organ harvesting.
“Recent announcements of creating a ‘Special Economic Zone’ on Hainan Island spark further concerns of the imminent expansion of transplant tourism as China declares plans to lead the world in organ transplantation by 2020,” a 2017 DAFOH report stated.
David Matas said that, given how lucrative the organ trade is, it’s unlikely to be halted any time soon.
“Unless abuse is confronted and opposed directly, it will continue. Those making large amounts of money by killing prisoners to sell their organs will not easily be dissuaded from continuing their crimes.” he said at a U.K. Parliament briefing session in November 2014.
