It was meant to be a casual fishing trip with her son, who’s an experienced fisherman, but the 68-year-old mother from the United Kingdom snagged her biggest fish ever—most likely bigger than any fish her son has ever caught too. The ginormous fish she reeled in was so big, its head was bigger than her torso.
Sue Elcock may be retired, but her work was cut out for her on a recent fishing trip off the southern coast of Western Australia. Sue was in Perth to visit her son, Simon, and daughter-in-law, Michelle.
“Simon is an experienced sea angler and I have been out with him before when I have been visiting he and Michelle,” she said, per a March 12 report by The Sun.
An early 5 a.m. start didn’t allow much time for waking up when Sue felt a tug on her electric rod just 40 minutes out to sea. Her expectation of possibly reeling in a couple of small fish was overturned when a 137-pound (62-kilogram) monster took the bait.
Believing it to be a “fair-sized fish,” the pensioner required some assistance from her son. But soon, everyone on board was helping the petite mother reel in her soon-to-be catch of a lifetime.
“I just couldn’t believe the size of it when it reared its head out the water. It was the size of a sofa,” Elcock said.
After a 40-minute struggle between the giant bass grouper, Sue, Simon, and the other anglers on board, the whopping great fish was finally hauled on board the charter boat.
Measuring in at 5 feet 4 inches (approx. 1.6 meters) long, the massive fish was longer than Sue by 2 inches.
“The biggest fish I’ve caught before was a snapper about a foot long and when this one took the bait on the bottom the tug on the line didn’t seem much,” Sue recalled.
“Someone said you would need an awful lot of chips to go with a fish like that,” she added. “But I’ve helped cut him up and get all that fish into the freezer. Simon and Michelle will be enjoying fish barbies for months when I’m long back in the U.K.”
“Mom caught a giant fish and I was thrilled for her,” Simon remarked. “The photo of her holding the fish is one to treasure.”
Looks like Sue is going to be eating fish for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the next few weeks.
