Alison Braun is most famous for her participation on the Australian reality TV show The Biggest Loser in season 3. She lost more than 55 kilograms (approx. 121 pounds) on the show, putting her in second place. But six months after the show aired, Alison faced a family tragedy—her husband of 14 years ended his life.
After Alison appeared on the show in 2008, her husband, Robert, committed suicide in 2009, leaving Alison to raise their three children on her own.
So on this day 10 years ago I woke up for my very first day on a Reality TV show. Still to this day have no idea how…
Robert struggled with depression for years. On the day he committed suicide, Alison spoke with her husband in the evening after he missed a flight to go to a mine site for his new job. A few hours later, Alison’s mother called to give her the heartbreaking news.
“I was worried that after my husband died that I would turn to food in my grief,” Alison told news.com.au. “All of us in the house were emotional eaters and when my husband died it was the hardest thing I had to deal with.”
Alison’s life changed in that moment, and she knew she had to make a decision—she could either succumb to the tragedy or rise above. Alison chose the latter.
“I also did make a conscious decision that I wanted to be a role model to my kids. I was their only parent left, and I had no choice at that point. I just had to make sure that I kept on going, set up that routine and live a healthy lifestyle,” Alison said on the Today show.
Alison then became an ambassador to Lifeline WA, an organization in Perth that provides “24 hour crisis support and suicide prevention services.”

A decade after the show, the 44-year-old has managed to keep the weight she lost on the show off, and now weighs 72 kilograms (approx. 159 pounds). Not only is she healthy, but Alison has found a new love—his name is Alan Taylor.
Alison met Alan two years ago, and he regularly appears on her Instagram account. In her social media posts, Alison can’t help but gush about him.
“Before Alan, I resigned myself that I probably wouldn’t get in a relationship again until the kids had grown up and left home, so this really wonderful thing happened when he came along and took me by surprise,” Alison said, as reported by Australian magazine Woman’s Day. “Two years on and we’re still like teenagers!”
Alison’s life now is completely different from a decade ago. She went through many highs and lows, and managed to come out stronger.
“You never get to pick and choose what comes your way in life, however you do get to choose how you will allow it to define you,” Alison shared.
That’s very true. No one’s life is perfect, so when a problem arises, what you do and how you overcome it is most important. And remember, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. Just ask Alison.
