Musician paralyzed from accident—he refuses to give up, brings American Idol judge to tears

A musician in Tennessee had thought “everything was over” when he met with an accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. A rekindling of determination occurred, however, when he saw that he was able to move his foot a little—and thus he forged ahead to push through all obstacles. He went on to participate in “American Idol.” Seeing his audition, one judge was overwhelmed, in tears, and speechless.

Shortly after David Francisco moved to Nashville to pursue his dream of becoming a musician, his dream was almost crushed when he was hit by a car. “Just three weeks after I moved to Nashville, a distracted driver ran a red light and T-boned me on my bicycle,” Francisco said in a pre-taped solo interview recorded for “American Idol.”

“I don’t remember anything before waking up in the hospital and asking, ‘Why aren’t my legs on the bed?’ I look down and sure enough, there’s my legs on the bed, but I can’t feel them.”

He then learned of the most devastating news.

“When they told me that I was paralyzed, I thought everything was over,” he recalled. Music is over. Relationships are over. I cried every single day for months.”

But one night, he saw his foot move “just a little.”

With physiotherapy, he started to improve, and now he can walk, though he’s still on the mend.

“I don’t take anything for granted now,” he said.

After the accident, an old friend named Kristi Platillero sent him a letter. They reconnected and ended up together.

With Platillero by his side, he auditioned on “American Idol” to have another shot at pursuing his dreams.

He performed Stevie Wonder’s 1976 classic “Isn’t She Lovely” for the judges, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan, whilst his wife watched on. The performance brought Katy Perry to tears.

“I’m just losing it,” Perry said. “The way she was looking at him with the purest kind of love.”

After the performance, Richie walked over to give Francisco a hug and told him, “You are an inspiration to us all.”

“The blessing of life is your spirit,” Richie added. “If you lose your spirit, you’ve lost everything. You are inspirational … I want you to be very proud of yourself.”

Francisco said that he had wanted to give people inspiration and hope.

“I feel like what I have to give is perspective and inspiration and hope … a lot of times people will tell me, ‘Wow, when I see what you went through, it makes my obstacles not seem so big,’ and so I’m here to encourage people to just, I guess, not see themselves as a victim, but to work and strive and try to make the most of whatever they’re going through,” Francisco said.

“You can find a lot of purpose in suffering, and I’ve definitely found a lot in my own suffering, so that’s what I try to encourage people through my music, through my story, and that’s what I hope comes across.”

Francisco was given his golden ticket to the “Hollywood Week” show.
