Newlyweds hear somebody screaming across the road. Then, bride bolts over to nearby commotion

Some brides would be devastated if they ruined their dress on their big day, but not for one bride in Pittsburgh—for something more important was at stake. Upon hearing someone yell from outside the hotel where she had just tied the knot, she sprang into action right away.

June 11, 2016, was a big day for Julie Stroyne and Andrew Nixon as they finally tied the knot and become husband and wife. Little did they expect that Stroyne would save a woman’s life right after their wedding.

When the couple walked out of the Pennsylvanian Hotel, they heard someone yelling: “Does anyone know CPR? Is anyone a doctor?”

Stroyne, a trauma nurse at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, ran over to find a young woman lying unconscious on a bench.

Seeing the sight in front of her, Stroyne dropped her flowers and purse and began using CPR on the woman, while another couple and some bartenders from across the street looked on.

“I kind of forgot about the day’s activities and focused on saving this woman’s life,” Stroyne told TODAY.

After several minutes, Stroyne felt the woman’s pulse was back.

But the couple didn’t leave until the paramedics had arrived.

The couple believed that the woman was in her 20s and had gone to a Kesha concert when she passed out after coming back.

“While it was happening, I wasn’t thinking much about my dress getting ripped or how funny it must have looked to see a bride run into action in her wedding dress,” Stroyne said. “I’m just happy someone in the medical field was passing by.”

After the incident, the couple continued with their pre-planned event—gathering with friends at the Westin Hotel’s bar right across the street. The newly married couple’s friends were amazed to hear that Stroyne had just saved a life.

“She happened to be in the right place at the right time and I’m glad she was,” Stroyne’s mom, Sandy, said.

As for her husband, Nixon, he’s very proud of her.

“I’ve known her since she was 15 and seeing what she did Saturday night didn’t surprise me at all,” Nixon said. “I’m very proud to call her my wife.”
