Man thinks stray kitten’s blindness is only disability—after taking her in, he learns sad truth

When a man spotted a little kitten on the staircase of his apartment building, he started feeding her. As time passed, however, he noticed that the kitten never opened her eyes, and realized she was blind. Later, he learned that this is not the only disability the kitten has.

Zeyad K., from Egypt, had been feeding a weeks-old kitten after finding her at the staircase of his apartment building, and named her Votchy. Little did he know that the kitten was blind, until she got bigger.

Zeyad thought Votchy had an eye infection.

“I opened her eye sockets to check, but there was nothing inside. That’s when I knew that she was completely blind,” Zeyad told Love Meow.

After realizing Votchy’s situation, Zeyad continued to feed her and stayed by her side until she had finished eating.

However, he was not able to take the kitten in as he was living with five other family members.

But everything changed when Zeyad and his family were away from home for a few days.

“I returned home to find her lying down on my doorstep and she was just skin and bones, looking a lot dirtier than she was before,” Zeyad recalled.

“My family didn’t need any more convincing after seeing that saddening sight, as I had been telling them how a blind stray cat wouldn’t be able to survive on her own and how we needed to take her in.”

By then, Votchy was too weak, and Zeyad had to provide around-the-clock care for her and hand-feed her.

Zeyad’s efforts paid off, and soon, Votchy recovered and could check out her new surroundings using her other senses—through sniffing around.

“She learned to navigate around the apartment more easily than I’d expected,” Zeyad said.

“When I first brought her in she could barely walk. The more strength she regained, the more she started exploring everywhere, even found a few favorite sleeping spots in tight spaces around the house.”

After Votchy had recovered, Zeyad and his family soon noticed that the kitten had another disability.

“She didn’t seem to be startled by any loud, jarring noise even though my other cat would immediately start running away if I started the vacuum or blender,” Zeyad said.

“She gets startled super easily if someone touches her even slightly. When I snapped my fingers really loudly right next to her ears, she would not even flinch or react in the slightest.”

That was when they realized that Votchy was also deaf.

Despite lacking both vision and hearing, Votchy does not seem different from other cats, as she is just as playful, and loves chasing her tail.

To have Votchy with him, Zeyad said, “It was one of my better decisions in life.”

“Now she’s living her life just like any other cat, and absolutely loves to be petted,” he added.
