We often hear stories of dogs rescuing their beloved humans from danger, but it’s rare to hear a cat doing so. However, this tough feline from York proves that cats can be heroes too!
At around 12:40 a.m. on Aug. 27, 2015, five or six shots were fired by an unidentified suspect from a .40-caliber gun in the first block of South Royal Street in York, Pennsylvania.
One of the stray bullets smashed through the window of Angelica Sipe’s home.
As a mother of a 3-year-old boy, Sipe’s first instinct was to check on her son, Daemire.
Fortunately, she found the boy to be sound asleep. However, she noticed a bullet hole in her couch, and her house cat, Opie, was lying motionless on the floor.
That’s when Sipe discovered the bullet had passed through the couch and hit Opie, who had been lying there.
“It came in the top of his head, out the bottom of his neck, and back into his shoulder and out his armpit rib area,” Sipe told FOX43.
After striking Opie, the bullet rebounded off the couch.
Then, it went buzzing across the room to a seat where Daemire was sleeping, before landing on a pillow—merely 6 or 7 inches above the boy.
“It could have been my son,” recalled a tearful Sipe.
Sipe claims Opie saved her son’s life by taking the bullet. If Opie wasn’t lying on that spot and the bullet hadn’t hit the cat first, it would have struck her little boy.
Opie was immediately rushed to an emergency clinic. Though doctors gave Sipe an option to put him down, Sipe refused, because he was “his son’s little hero.”
“I wanted to keep him,” she said.
Opie had a drainage tube and stitches on his head following the surgery. Although the tough cat sustained some muscle damage, he was expected to make a full recovery.
“I thought he was going to die,” Sipe told York Dispatch.
Luckily, Opie’s nine lives weren’t used up after all!
Even though Opie’s vet bills mounted to a hefty $1,000, Sipe was glad to have the cat back in her house, where he belongs.
Later, Sipe posted a photo of Opie and Daemire huddled together on Facebook. “This moment right here is what I am most thankful for,” she wrote.
Opie, you are one feisty cat! Whether or not you were asleep and unaware at the time of the shooting, your family will remember your sacrifice forever.
