No one lifted a finger for this elderly lady in a wheelchair when she didn’t have a ride home from the hospital emergency room in September 2017. That’s when an everyday hero, a military man who was waiting for his wife, approached her and had the decency to do what any good person should do.
Ashley Cherry was also in the ER when the stranded lady in her wheelchair and the burly-looking soldier met. Cherry managed to capture it on camera. The heartwarming picture was posted on the Facebook page Love What Matters, and, alongside the post, Cherry wrote: “My husband and I were in the ER and an elderly lady was wheeled out to leave. She told the receptionist she had no family or ride home.”
Cherry found it upsetting how the staff had responded to the lady, who was clearly in need of help. “I was saddened to see some (not all) of the employees lack of concern as to how she would get home,” said Cherry.
Then, a man who had been waiting for his wife approached the lady and told her that he would “gladly take her home.”
“This man not knowing her or having a clue where she lived volunteered his time to care of this lovely woman,” Cherry said. The lady wanted to pay for the ride but the man declined.
While he went outside to get his truck, Cherry helped wheel her out of the hospital and then helped her into the vehicle.
She concluded after witnessing the whole episode that “there are still great people in this world,” and “we have to care for our elders like this nice man.”
Cherry learned the man’s name after speaking to his wife. “His name is Jeffery and he is military here at Ft. Campbell KY. Not only does this man serve our great country, he serves his great little community,” Cherry wrote.
“I just wanted to give a little recognition and respect to this man. Jeffery, if you see this, just know your deeds are recognized and appreciated by your community. Thank you Sir for serving our country and our community,” she added.
Jeffery’s good deed garnered much praise after the Facebook post went viral.
One Facebook user wrote, “That’s how a real gentleman conducts himself. I’m so glad he was there at the right time to help her.”
“Thank you, Jeffrey. For your service to our Country and your fellow Citizens. Heroes are all around us, everywhere/everyday,” another commented.
